One of the first skills that we teach each year is summarizing. Summarizing is one way that a student can "check for understanding" while reading. It is important to remember that, when summarizing, we're telling the main (or big) idea!
Rules to follow when summarizing:
1. Only restate the main idea. 2. Find and use key words and phrases from the text, but do not copy whole sentences. 3. Paraphrase- say things in your own words. 4. Leave out details; they are not important in the summary. |
